🐾 DOGS ON THE BEACH ON TYBEE... COULD IT ACTUALLY HAPPEN?

After nearly 15 years of talking about it, Tybee Island is officially taking another look at allowing dogs on the beach.

Tybee City Council will hold a public workshop on Wednesday, October 14 at 3:00 PM at the Tybee Island Police Station to discuss the issue. The meeting is open to the public, and residents are encouraged to attend and share their views.

Could Tybee finally find a reasonable way to allow dogs on the beach?

Nearby coastal communities, including St. Simons Island and Hilton Head Island, allow dogs on their beaches under rules designed to balance pet access with wildlife protection, public safety, and the enjoyment of other beachgoers. Could a similar approach work here?

Tybee Mayor Brian West recently shared his thoughts on the issue, laying out both the benefits and concerns.

THE CASE FOR DOGS 🐕

Dog-friendly beach access could give pets a place to exercise and socialize while allowing families to enjoy the beach together. It could also make Tybee more welcoming to travelers with pets and potentially benefit local restaurants, shops, hotels, and other businesses.

THE CONCERNS 🐦

There are legitimate issues to consider, including protecting nesting shorebirds and other wildlife, keeping dogs under control, cleaning up pet waste, and respecting beachgoers who may not be comfortable around dogs.

But this doesn't necessarily have to be an all-or-nothing decision.

Possible solutions could include designated dog-friendly areas, leash requirements, limited hours, seasonal restrictions, and protected wildlife zones.

As Mayor West put it, the question may not simply be whether dogs belong on the beach, but whether Tybee can create rules that allow dogs to enjoy the sand and surf while protecting wildlife and respecting everyone who uses the beach.

What do YOU think? 🤔

🐾 Should dogs be allowed on Tybee's beach?
🐾 Should they be limited to certain hours or areas?
🐾 Should leashes be required?
🐾 Could Tybee adopt rules similar to St. Simons or Hilton Head?

Come make your voice heard.
